<title>&apos;The Bible in the Life of the Church&apos; project launched by the Anglican Communion</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/news.cfm/2010/1/28/ACNS4680</link>
<description>

&amp;lsquo;The Bible in the Life of the Church&amp;rsquo; is a major project being undertaken over three years by the Anglican Communion, mandated by the Anglican Consultative Council at its Jamaica meeting in May 2009. It is seeking to discover how Anglican Christians read the Bible, recognising the very diverse contexts we inevitably bring to this reading. With the support of the Anglican Communion Department of Theological Studies, the work of this Bible project will largely take place in a number of Regional Groups based around theological education institutions in Kenya, Southern Africa, South East Asia, Oceania, North America and Britain.

As a major aftershock rocked the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and L&amp;eacute;og&amp;acirc;ne, more news emerged Jan. 20 about the growing role of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti in the country&apos;s short-term relief efforts and long-term recovery. The news included reports of babies being born and the loss of more people served by the diocese.

This morning&amp;rsquo;s reading from the Letter to the Hebrews begins with the boldest and most unambiguous statement possible of what&amp;rsquo;s new and different about Christmas.&amp;nbsp;God has always been communicating with humanity, in any number of ways; but what we need from God is more than just information.&amp;nbsp;The climax of the story is the sending of a Son: when all has been said and done on the level of information what still needs to be made clear to us is that the point of it all is relationship.&amp;nbsp;

From Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop of Congo and Bishop of Winchester
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Congo and the Bishop of Winchester today voiced their concerns over the continuing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Today marks the centenary of the Great Congo Demonstration led by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Randall Davidson, to protest against violence and oppression in the Congo Free State. Speaking at the Royal Albert Hall on 19 November 1909, Archbishop Davidson condemned the &amp;ldquo;great wrong&amp;rdquo; perpetrated against the people of Congo, claiming, &amp;ldquo;we are ourselves in part responsible for the past, and, if that wrong be allowed to continue, by whomsoever carried out, we shall be answerable to God and man for its continuance.&amp;rdquo;

The recent tragedy of Gojra, where nine Pakistani Christians were burnt to death by a frenzied mob, has raised yet again the whole issue of the status and security of the religious minorities in an overwhelmingly Islamic country like Pakistan. This incident has highlighted in a very painful and tragic way, the experiences of Pakistani Christians, who so often are victimized under the false pretext of either having desecrated the Holy Quran or insulting the holy Prophet of Islam.

Two major suicide bomb attacks in Baghdad on Sunday, Oct 25, caused serious damage to St. George&apos;s Anglican Church and left at least 150 dead and more than 600 injured on the streets outside.
When the coordinated car bombs exploded in downtown Baghdad at 10:30 a.m. the church was empty. &amp;quot;If the bomb had been just a few hours later, the glass from the windows would have ripped through the congregation causing terrible human damage,&amp;quot; said the Revd Canon Andrew White, vicar of St. George&apos;s, the only Anglican church in Iraq. The explosions damaged the church&apos;s clinic, bookshop, school rooms and the Mothers&apos; Union buildings.

<title>Archbishop of Canterburys sermon to mark the end of military operations in Iraq</title>
<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/10/9/Archbishop-of-Canterburys-sermon-to-mark-the-end-of-military-operations-in-Iraq</link>
<description>

The sermon given today by the Archbishop of Canterbury at a service of commemoration to mark the end of military operations in Iraq, held at St Paul&amp;rsquo;s Cathedral London:
Readings:&amp;nbsp;Ecclesiastes 3: 1&amp;mdash;8; Ephesians 6.10&amp;mdash;17
&amp;lsquo;There is a time for every matter under heaven&amp;rsquo;.&amp;nbsp;Today is a time for reflecting on the human cost of seeking for justice; on the generosity of so many people, young and not so young, in facing and meeting that cost; and on the countless mysterious ways in which such people have been equipped to meet the cost, through their relationships, through the quiet support and inspiration of those who love them and have shaped who they are.&amp;nbsp;A time to reflect on the unexpected qualities of people like ourselves who, caught up in the confusions of a great international upheaval, simply got on with the task they were given because they believed that order and justice mattered.

In terms of numbers, the Anglican Church isn&amp;rsquo;t a very big player in Samoa.
But the scale of the tsunami disaster is such that no-one with any Pacific connections has been left untouched by it &amp;ndash; including some leading figures in the Diocese of Polynesia.
Take Taimalelagi Fagamalama Tuatagaloa-Leota, for example.
Archdeacon Tai, as she&amp;rsquo;s known to hundreds in this church is a Samoan living in Auckland. She has served as the Anglican Observer at the United Nations, on the Anglican Consultative Council, as a Diocese of Polynesia representative to the General Synod, and earlier this year she was priested.

In an extraordinary double ceremony, former USPG staff member Chad Gandiya was first consecrated bishop and then enthroned as the Bishop of the Diocese of Harare, part of the Church of the Province of Central Africa (CPCA).
In the cold of a Zimbabwe winter morning, more than 5,000 people packed into one of Harare&amp;rsquo;s sports arenas for a jubilant four-hour eucharist. The service was presided over by the dean of the province, Bishop Albert Chama, from Zambia.

<description>

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have written to Bishops in the Church of England recommending the suspension of the sharing of the chalice at communion. The Archbishops&amp;rsquo; letter follows advice from the Department of Health not to share &amp;ldquo;common vessels&amp;rdquo; for food or drink. For those who wish still to offer both bread and wine, the Archbishops have recommended use of &amp;ldquo;personal intinction by the presiding minister&amp;rdquo;

<link>http://www.aco.org/acns/digest/index.cfm/2009/6/19/The-Archbishop-of-Armagh-Welcomes-Act-of-Loyalist-Decommissioning</link>
<description>

From the Most Revd Alan Harper, OBE, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland:
I very much look forward to full confirmation of the complete decommissioning of all armaments held by loyalist paramilitaries. It will represent a further and extremely welcome step towards confidence building and the normalisation of society in Northern Ireland. I recognise that on the part of the leadership of the paramilitary groups full decommissioning has been a challenging outcome to deliver; therefore, I commend those within loyalism who have argued consistently for decommissioning over a considerable period. Now full energy and commitment can be devoted to community development and the enhancement of the lives of people in loyalist areas free from the dark shadow of the gun.

An opportunity for national growth and harmony
I recently returned from one of my regular pastoral visits to our congregations (churches) and schools in Jaffna. Such visits are always educative and humbling.
What was immediately noticeable was the preoccupation with routine in the lives of the people; simply because there seems to be little else to look forward to.

The word family evokes a wide range of emotions. For some it is a very loving and supportive word that is the centre of their being. For others it is a place of distance anxiety and frustration with people who are closely related failing to talk or listen to one another. We use the term in many ways, thinking of the Church as a family and even the Anglican Communion as one family under our Lord and Saviour.
